Student Transportation Safety Guidelines: The Gold Standard

Safe Student Transportation

In the realm of education, ensuring the safety of students extends beyond the classroom. Safe transportation to and from school is crucial not only for students’ physical and psychological well-being but also for their academic success.

When you imagine safe student transportation, you can’t help but think of the iconic yellow school bus. It’s the picture of safety. It’s large, slow, and seemingly impenetrable. A school bus is full of smiling children as it follows a dependable route on the same daily schedule, only making authorized and predictable stops. It’s driven by the same friendly driver that most families have known for years and even comes with its own traffic sign and laws for the surrounding traffic.

As society’s understanding of our children’s needs evolves, so does the landscape of student transportation. Small-capacity vehicles challenge our perception of school transportation by providing students with safe and economical rides to and from school. Students who benefit from Alternative Student Transportation experience:

  • Living with special needs
  • Housing insecurity
  • Medical fragility
  • A need for car seats or other safety equipment
  • Living in rural or hard-to-reach areas
  • Participation in specialty programs

Student Transportation Safety

While the evolution of student transportation has grown to include transporting students in small-capacity vehicles and comes with remarkable benefits, it also brings questions about safety guarantees.

Traditional Student Transportation: Safety Regulations

In addition to the school bus’s built-in safety measures that are so expected that they almost go unnoticed, school bus transportation is regulated through a combination of federal and state laws, guidelines, and regulations.

Each state has its specific regulations for school bus safety which can include driver qualifications, training, and certification; vehicle inspections; and operational procedures. In fact, many states require regular school bus inspections to ensure that each bus meets safety standards. In addition to state and federal oversight, school districts implement safety policies at the local level.

With so much supervision, school districts, school staff, and parents can rest assured that their students are in safe hands with enforced safety programs that may include:

  • Driver training and certification
  • Vehicle safety features and consistent inspections
  • The enforcement of traffic laws during student loading and unloading during student loading and unloading
  • Student education on safety
  • Technological advances

But how is safety regulated for Alternative Student Transportation which serves some of our most vulnerable student populations? What guarantees do parents and school districts have, especially if the drivers transporting these students aren’t employed by the district?

Alternative Student Transportation: Safety Regulations

While there are some federal and state regulations for contracted student transportation, they are wildly inconsistent and often insufficient. At EverDriven, we believe that all students deserve equal access to education and that starts with safe, reliable transportation to get them there. That’s why we partner with state officials to advocate for the implementation and adoption of what we refer to as common-sense safety standards, specifically for Alternative Student Transportation providers.

Ensuring Safety in Small-Capacity Vehicles

Students who benefit from alternative transportation options deserve the same tireless attention to safety as students riding the school bus, while school districts and parents deserve the same peace of mind. This begs the question, what safety assurances should school districts expect and inquire about when selecting a student transportation partner?

As an industry leader in safety, EverDriven is paving the way for more consistent safety measures and setting the standard for other vendors with the EverDriven Safety Commitment.

EverDriven Safety Commitment

Including everything from operational protocols to driver, monitor, and vehicle vetting, the EverDriven Safety Commitment is the industry-leading safety standard for Alternative Student Transportation.

The EverDriven Safety Commitment can serve as a safety guide for evaluating safe student transportation partners as it includes:

  • Driver qualifications, identification, and education
  • Vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Operational policies and procedures
  • Safe student transportation technology

Driver Qualifications, Identification, and Education

Drivers can make or break a student’s experience, which is why we invest so heavily in the driver vetting process. To transport students with EverDriven, we require EverSafe Drivers to become SafeRide Certified. That means EverSafe Drivers must satisfy up to 18 screening requirements, including a federal background check, drug testing, DMV record checks, and much more.

Additionally, EverSafe Drivers must complete EverDriven’s proprietary SafeRide Education Course, a first-of-its-kind, four-and-a-half-hour course built specifically with Alternative Transportation Drivers in mind to stay current on safe driving practices, safety equipment installation, and sensitivity coaching.

After becoming SafeRide Certified, EverSafe Drivers are continually monitored and are required to complete continuing education and ongoing random drug screening. EverDriven also conducts SafeRide Quality checks, our in-person, random, inspections to ensure that EverSafe Drivers and their vehicles are clean, safe, and ready to serve students.

As an added safety measure, EverSafe Drivers are easily identifiable while transporting students so that school staff and parents or guardians know which vehicles and drivers are serving EverDriven students. We provide all EverSafe Drivers with an easy-to-see EverDriven window sticker, as well as blue branded safety vests.

Vehicle Safety and Maintenance

Driver vetting isn’t all we do, EverDriven requires every small-capacity vehicle to pass a 50-point EverDriven inspection as well as an inspection by a certified, third-party mechanic annually. These inspections include everything from safety belts to headlights to ensure vehicles meet all state and federal safety standards.

Ongoing vehicle inspections are a key component of our SafeRide Quality Checks and another example of how we continually monitor EverSafe drivers and vehicles. In fact, we performed more than 6,000 SafeRide Quality Checks throughout the 2023/2024 school year.

Vehicles are also equipped with all the necessary safety equipment needed to transport passengers safely. EverSafe Drivers are educated on how to properly install car seats, harnesses, buckle guards, or any other safety equipment needed for the journey.

Operational Policies and Procedures

At EverDriven, safety is not just a priority—it’s a standard. Our SafeRide Guidelines outline strict protocols that EverSafe Drivers and Monitors adhere to on every trip to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for students.

Before a Trip Begins

EverDriven implements safety measures long before a car is on the road. Similar to procedures followed by school bus drivers, EverSafe Drivers conduct a vehicle inspection before the trip begins. During this inspection, drivers must ensure that all safety equipment is properly installed, the vehicle is clean and comfortable, and the driver is ready to receive a passenger.

During a Trip

EverDriven strives to provide the same predictable and consistent transportation that a student receives from their school district. That’s why EverDriven provides the same EverSafe Driver to the same student every day. Like what students experience on a school bus, they can get to know their driver over time. But most importantly, they know who to expect and when to expect them.

In the event an EverSafe Driver is ill, a substitute driver who is easily identifiable and SafeRide Certified performs the trip.

During a trip, only authorized passengers (drivers, monitors, and students) are allowed in the vehicle while only stops authorized by the school district are permitted.

EverSafe Drivers and Monitors are trained to provide pleasant service, helping students feel comfortable and at ease during their trip. We understand that the journey to and from school can be stressful for some students, and we strive to create a positive and welcoming environment.

EverDriven also takes additional precautions during adverse weather conditions to ensure the safety of our passengers.

After a Trip

At the end of each trip, EverSafe Drivers check the vehicle for student belongings.

Technology for Safe Student Transportation

A large advantage of contracted student transportation is technology-enabled safety for students and drivers. EverDriven uses technology to provide transparency to school districts and parents while offering an additional layer of accountability.

EverDriven’s TripCentral

EverDriven’s TripCentral promotes safe student transportation by providing school districts:

  • An online tool where school districts can request student transportation and enter protected student information, securely.
  • Pertinent information for each student’s transportation subscription like schedules, driver information, vehicle information, and more.
  • Transparent trip tracking through GPS so school districts know the status of a trip and the location of a student.

EverDriven VIP App

This mobile app, available to parents and school staff, ensures student safety through:

  • GPS-enabled trip tracking
  • EverSafe Driver and vehicle details
  • Secure data with geo-fencing technology

Setting the Gold Standard for Safe Student Transportation

Ensuring the safety of students during their journey to and from school is often overshadowed by what is happening in the classroom, however, it is a critical component of the education system. The evolution of student transportation to other methods outside of the traditional yellow school bus enables districts to accommodate diverse student needs and enables routing and budget efficiencies. Adversely, it has made the student transportation landscape more complex. Traditional yellow school buses, with their stringent regulations and iconic status, have set the bar for safe student transportation, and it’s time for alternative methods to meet that bar.

The rise of Alternative Student Transportation offers a valuable solution for students with special needs, those experiencing homelessness, medical fragility, or for those living in rural areas. As this shift in student transportation is still relatively new, questions about its safety have emerged. EverDriven is leading the charge in setting and exceeding safety standards in this sector, ensuring that every student receives the safest possible ride by leveraging:

  • Driver vetting, education, and identification
  • Vehicle safety and monitoring
  • SafeRide Guidelines: Operational policies and procedures
  • Technology

In conclusion, the gold standard in Alternative Student Transportation safety is achieved through regulations, continuous evolution in safety standards, and the integration of advanced technology. EverDriven exemplifies this standard by ensuring that all students, especially those with unique needs, receive safe and reliable transportation to and from school. By maintaining high safety standards, investing in driver education, and leveraging technology, EverDriven sets the benchmark for safe student transportation, providing peace of mind to parents and school districts alike.
